Morgan Geekie and the Boston Bruins shuffled lines at TD Garden as his goal drought met a push for balanced scoring.

The shakeup showed up before the Calgary Flames game, with Geekie bumped to the third line for a different look. Boston still handled Calgary 4-1, so the experiment started with two points anyway.

The odd part is Geekie remains Boston's leading goal scorer with 25, yet he has not scored since December 20.

So the Bruins tried spreading the danger, moving Geekie alongside 21-year-old center Fraser Minten and Alex Steeves. Up top, they reunited Marat Khusnutdinov with Elias Lindholm and David Pastrnak to keep pucks flowing to Pasta.

NESN noted one awkward detail from the win, the Steeves-Minten-Geekie group was the only forward combination not on the ice for a Boston goal. That's not a panic siren, but it does underline why Geekie's drought is getting attention.

Morgan Geekie drought triggers Boston Bruins line shuffle

As a Bruins fan, this feels like a smart nudge, not a benching, because the team needs more than one line to scare you.

Geekie sounded like a guy trying to laugh his way through it, not spiral. “Just change the color of your tape for a little bit or sticks, or something like that,” he said.

Then he nailed the mental side, and you could hear the shrug in his voice. “Try not to put too much weight on it.”

He kept going with the most honest part of the whole thing. “I feel like I've been pretty lucky the last year or so … so it's kind of about time this happens.”

And he finished with the line every scorer eventually has to say out loud. “This is one of those things everyone goes through.”

Tactically, the third line could actually help him, with softer matchups and more offensive-zone looks, which can turn a slump into one greasy rebound goal. Boston's next milestone is Saturday against the New York Rangers, and the Bruins would love nothing more than Geekie snapping it early.
