Morgan Geekie is back for the Boston Bruins against the Detroit Red Wings tonight, and the family matter is now a happy one.
Boston confirmed Tuesday that Geekie is set to return to the lineup after stepping away over the weekend. NHL.com also reported he will dress against Detroit at TD Garden.
The story began Saturday versus the New York Rangers, when Geekie left after the first period and did not return. The Bruins went on to win 10-2, but his sudden exit changed the vibe fast.
He then missed Sunday's 1-0 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins, which kept questions swirling. Marco Sturm said the room understood because “we know the importance of family.”
Morgan Geekie return lifts Boston Bruins tonight
As a fan, the relief hits first, because hockey is tiny next to this stuff. The reason Geekie left is that he and his wife welcomed their son, Max, and NHL.com noted “Everybody's healthy.”
NHL.com said Emma Geekie was at the game Saturday before going into labor, and the couple had to slip out quickly. Geekie admitted it had been on his mind, calling it “very unpredictable,” and saying his wife “was a champ.”
On the ice, the Bruins get back a scorer they cannot fake with line juggling. ESPN lists Geekie at 25 goals and 41 points this season, and NHL.com confirms he leads Boston in goals with 25.
He is 27, a 2017 third-round pick, 67th overall by Carolina, and he has earned his touches in the slot. When Geekie is driving the middle, Boston's forecheck looks heavier, and their cycle lasts longer.
Detroit is a real test, because the Red Wings punish loose coverage off rush looks. If Geekie brings his usual net front timing, it gives Boston a cleaner path to ugly goals.
