In a surprising move, Boston Bruins prospect Kai Wissmann has decided to bid farewell to North America and the Boston Bruins after just one season and return to his home country, Germany.
Wissmann's former club, Eisbaren Berlin, wasted no time in announcing his signing to a long-term contract, although the exact duration was not disclosed.
Reflecting on his time in the AHL, Wissmann expressed his yearning for the electrifying atmosphere of the DEL arenas, particularly the unforgettable experience of their home games at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
"During my time in the AHL, I noticed more and more how much I missed the atmosphere in the different DEL arenas. Especially at our home games in the Mercedes-Benz Arena. I'm really looking forward to hearing the whole arena sing our polar bear song again before we enter through the polar bear's head. When I think about it, I'm already motivated again for the coming season. It feels like coming home to me. Berlin is a great city," Wissmann said.
He eagerly anticipates hearing the entire arena unite in singing their iconic polar bear song as they enter through the polar bear's head. This heartfelt reunion with his team and city fills him with renewed motivation for the upcoming season, as he describes it as a homecoming. Wissmann also spoke highly of Berlin, acknowledging it as a remarkable city.
During his stint in the American Hockey League with the Providence Bruins, the 26-year-old defenseman showcased his skills, notching nine points (one goal, eight assists), accumulating 18 penalty minutes, and boasting a plus-five rating across 31 games.
Following the conclusion of his season, Wissmann proudly represented his country on the international stage, joining the German National Team for the 2023 IIHF World Hockey Championship. He played a pivotal role in securing Germany's first medal at the tournament since 1953, contributing to their triumphant campaign.
