Max Lundgren gives Marco Sturm and the Boston Bruins another big body in goal after Sunday's signing for the 2026-27 season.
The Bruins completed the move on March 29, with Don Sweeney announcing a one-year entry-level contract carrying an NHL cap hit of $952,500.
Take a look:
That makes this more than a routine paperwork story. Boston is adding a 23-year-old goaltender who just turned a strong NCAA season into a contract and a real spot in the organization's depth chart.
Lundgren appeared in 39 games for Merrimack College in 2025-26 and posted a 21-16-2 record. He also finished the year with a 2.55 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage.
There's size here too. Lundgren is listed at 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, the kind of frame NHL clubs still love to bet on when they believe there's more development ahead.
What jumps off the page most is workload. Lundgren led all NCAA goaltenders with 1,134 saves, which says plenty about his ability to stay in the fight when games get heavy.
Boston adds another goalie to its pipeline
His biggest moment came in the Hockey East championship game, where he stopped 49 shots and helped Merrimack win its first conference title. He left that weekend with tournament MVP honors.
Over two seasons at Merrimack, Lundgren went 29-29-2 with a 2.67 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage. That kind of sample gives the Bruins a longer look than one hot month.
Boston's NHL crease already features Jeremy Swayman and Joonas Korpisalo, so this signing is about future depth and internal competition more than an immediate roster opening.
It also fits the timing around the organization's prospect build. The Bruins have been active with young players this month, and Lundgren now joins that next wave entering the system.
For Sturm, this is the kind of move that matters even if it won't change tomorrow night's lineup card. Goaltending depth can get tested fast over a long season.
Lundgren arrives as an undrafted goalie who forced a team to act after a breakout year. That usually gets attention inside a front office because it means development staff saw something worth locking in now.
The Bruins didn't just add a name to a list on Sunday. They added a goalie with size, heavy usage, and a championship push on his résumé, and that gives this signing real weight heading into 2026-27.
Will Max Lundgren play an NHL game for the Bruins in 2026-27?
