Lindy Ruff and head coach Marco Sturm have already turned this Sabres-Bruins series into something personal.

Buffalo didn't need much extra fuel before Game 1, but Sturm's remarks gave the Sabres plenty of it.

His comments made their way through the locker room fast and changed the tone around the series opener.

Ruff was called out directly, and he didn't duck it.

He answered without dragging the story off course, but there was no mistaking the edge in his response.

"You know that's his take on his team," said Ruff. "I have a lot of respect for what our team has done and how we play, the speed at which we play the game. They've got a good team, they know who they are and we know who we are."

That's a classic playoff answer, but it still landed.

Ruff defended the way Buffalo plays and made it clear the Sabres aren't about to get pushed off their identity now.

Alex Tuch took the next step and leaned into the part of the story Sturm seemed to question. His response pointed straight at the kind of series Buffalo expects this to become.

Sabres turn Marco Sturm's comments into fuel as Lindy Ruff responds

"That's his analysis of it," said Tuch. "When it comes to the playoffs everyone had to play big and strong to be able to win. I think we have a lot of guys in here that are gonna up the physicality."

That matters because Tuch didn't frame this as talk for the cameras. He framed it as a warning that Buffalo expects a heavier, harder series from puck drop.

Josh Doan came at it from the other side.

He didn't deny the room saw the comments. He just made it clear Buffalo isn't interested in getting dragged into a side show.

"Obviously we've all seen it," admitted Doan. "At the end of the day our group trusts what we're doing here and we'll just let that play out through the series. We're gonna stick to our game plan. It's one of those things that you see but at the end of the day no real response from us in this room."

That split is what makes this interesting. Ruff defended the team, Tuch pushed back with bite, and Doan tried to shut the noise out before it grows any bigger.

Either way, Sturm's words already did their job. Before Game 1 even started, this matchup had more heat, more edge, and a lot more pressure on every shift.
