Marco Sturm just closed the book on his first NHL season, and the Boston Bruins room is publicly backing him after a 45-27-10 finish.
The first-year head coach walked into a retool, a new system, and a fan base that had cycled through three coaches in five years.
He came out the other side with 100 points, the eighth-best overall ranking in the league, and a return to the postseason.
Speaking this week on breakup day, Casey Mittelstadt put it plainly. He said Sturm "empowered" him to bounce back, and "stuck with me" through the grind.
That word kept showing up. Buy-in. Empowered. Confidence. Coming from a room that had every reason to be skeptical of another new voice behind the bench.
Viktor Arvidsson, who knew Sturm before Boston, said he "had huge confidence" in the head coach. The 33-year-old winger finished the year a plus-20 with 25 goals.
How Don Sweeney and a quiet front office shaped the room
The hiring lined up with a two-year extension for GM Don Sweeney, and Sturm said he was at the table for free agency and the draft from day one.
That access matters. Sturm pointed to his time in Los Angeles, where he was not as involved, and made clear the Boston model gave him real input on the roster.
You can see his fingerprints on the depth. Fraser Minten played all 82 games, finished plus-21, and walked off with the Seventh Player Award.
Marat Khusnutdinov added 15 goals and 33 points in 77 games. Lukas Reichel got a 29-game look. None of those were headline acquisitions in July.
Is this a Stanley Cup roster yet? No. Cam Neely said as much, calling for more work this summer while still labelling Sturm's job "remarkable."
The Bruins went 29-11-1 at home, which kept the season afloat. The road number, 16-16-9, is the one that has to climb if 100 points is the floor.
That is where the next test lives. A first-year coach selling buy-in is one thing. A second-year coach finding a half-step of speed and skill on the road is another conversation entirely.
Has Marco Sturm earned the long-term keys to the Bruins?
