Morgan Geekie just scored the kind of goal every goaltender tries to forget before the next faceoff.
The Boston Bruins forward chipped a puck in from distance and watched it sneak past Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in Game 2 of the Bruins-Sabres series on Tuesday night at KeyBank Center.
Nothing fancy. Nothing hard. Just a dump-in that found twine.
Bad luck for UPL. Brutal timing in a game where every inch of ice is a fight.
Luukkonen finished the regular season with a .908 save percentage across 35 appearances at a $4.75 million cap hit.
He's Buffalo's starter for a reason, and letting a weak chip-in beat him in a playoff game is the kind of moment that sticks in a goalie's head for at least one more period.
A Boston Bruins team taking the soft bounce it needed after dropping Game 1
Here's the goal in case you missed it on the broadcast.
Geekie, 27, finished the regular season with 39 goals, 68 points, and a plus- minus of minus-5 on a $5.5 million cap hit. Twelve of those goals came on the power play. He's been on a 5-goal run over his last 5 regular-season games.
Scoring on a dump-in isn't the way he drew it up. Nobody ever does. But Geekie will take it.
Boston came into Game 2 trailing the series after Mattias Samuelsson's go-ahead goal in Game 1 sent the Canalside crowd into a frenzy. The Bruins have to steal one of these road games to avoid flying home 0-2.
A fluke dump-in goal is the kind of bounce that resets all of that emotional weight. Every Bruin on the bench leans forward. Every Sabre looks down at the ice.
That's the way playoff games tilt.
Lindy Ruff now has to decide whether to stick with UPL or consider Alex Lyon, who also posted .906 save percentage with 3 shutouts in 36 appearances. Probably he sticks. Good goaltending decisions don't chase a single bad bounce.
But Ruff also knows Sturm's group just found a way to score without earning it. In a series where Boston was getting outworked five on five, that's the dangerous kind of gift.
UPL's next save has to be the one that tells his bench he's fine. Goaltenders know exactly when those moments need to happen.
Should Lindy Ruff consider pulling UPL for Alex Lyon after that goal?
