New insight has surfaced regarding former Boston Bruins' Brandon Carlo, revealing a blockbuster trade failed involving the defenseman.

The Boston Bruins traded their former blue liner, Brandon Carlo, to the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline, in return for Fraser Minten, a 4th-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and a 1st-round pick in 2026 (conditional) on March 7, 2025.

However, a recent statement has unveiled that the Toronto Maple Leafs were expected to undergo a blockbuster trade, which would see this former Bruin traded to the Buffalo Sabres.

Failed blockbuster trade surfaces involving former Boston Bruins blue liner, Brandon Carlo

A new report by James Wilson of NHL Trade Rumors revealed that the Toronto Maple Leafs were set to trade their newly acquired defenseman to the Sabres.

"According to Mirtle, Toronto discussed a swap that would have sent Brandon Carlo to the Buffalo Sabres for JJ Peterka. The framework mirrored what Buffalo eventually did, with the winger later heading to the Utah Mammoth while the Sabres brought in a big right-shot defenseman elsewhere."James Wilson wrote

Wilson's report was referenced to reporter, Mirtle, as he revealed the Maple Leafs were linked to trading him for JJ Peterka.

Take a look:

"I think there's buyer's remorse with [Brandon] Carlo.. It's telling that when the Leafs were looking at trading for a winger, they were looking to move him for [JJ] Peterka."

@mirtle joins @JDBunkis to discuss the issues with the #MapleLeafs defence group.

Wilson continued:

"In short, the Maple Leafs considered sacrificing size on the back end to add a fast, top-six winger, then passed. In hindsight, that kind of speed and secondary scoring would help a forward group that leans heavily on William Nylander while the defense struggles to exit cleanly."

Do you think the Boston Bruins dodged a bullet by trading Brandon Carlo away?
