New controversy surfaces after Bruins fans claim a newly acquired player has stolen a roster spot from a fan favourite in Boston.
Today, October 5, the Boston Bruins completed several moves involving their 2025/26 NHL regular season roster.
And new insight has unveiled a controversial move has made some of Boston infuriated.
Boston Bruins organization's recent move infuriates fans
The Boston Bruins' moves of the day went as follows:
“The #Bruins have assigned forward Matt Poitras to Providence. In addition, forwards Mataj Blumel and Alex Steeves, defenseman Jonathan Aspirot, and goaltender Michael DiPietro have been placed on waivers for the purpose of an assignment to Providence”
Fans began to show their frustrations as Boston Bruins' Fraser Minten arguably stole Matt Poitras' position.
A post was then made on social media, via “X”, by a Bruins reporter regarding this aspect.
Take a look:
“I'm genuinely curious.
What are other people seeing in Matt Poitras that made him look better than Fraser Minten?
I think Poitras is a great player - and will eventually get consistent NHL time - but right now? Minten took his job.”
Following this post, a Bruins reporter responded with a great argument.
“Poitras generates offensive chances. Literally every player on the team that he has played with (Pastrnak included) has better chances of scoring when Poitras is on the ice with them. His vision, puck control, and passing are all extremely high-level in addition to his hockey IQ and awareness.
Minten is a better defensive center with solid offensive upside. He is stronger on the puck and better in board battles. Poitras drastically improved his physical game in Providence last season.
However, what you're asking about is a matter of perspective. They are fighting for the 3C spot. A position that Minten is better suited for, given playstyle and size. Poitras is better suited for a 2C role. Consider comparing Charlie Coyle to David Krejci along similar lines - both were great at different things and successful in their roles. However, if you tried to swap their roles, you'd still see strong players just not in their best position for success.”
Do you think the Boston Bruins made the wrong move by putting Matthew Poitras on waivers?
