Rasmus Andersson to the Boston Bruins just took a sharp turn, and it all comes down to a contract extension.

On Friday, the prevailing read was Boston was backing off because Andersson would not commit long term. Jimmy Murphy even posted that the Bruins were out unless Andersson changed his mind.

Early Saturday, that “unless” apparently happened. Murphy reported he heard from the same source that Andersson changed course, and that the defenseman, the Bruins, and the Calgary Flames are now “on the same page” toward a deal.

That is the key detail, because Andersson is not the kind of add you rent casually. He carries a $4.55 million cap hit and his current contract expires after the 2025-26 season.

Andersson's value also explains why this story keeps resurfacing. PuckPedia lists him at 10 goals and 29 points in 47 games, while ESPN has him at nine goals and 28 points, basically the same impact.

Rasmus Andersson extension talks jolt Boston Bruins

Murphy's explanation for the change of heart leaned heavily on recruitment. Boston has two of Andersson's former Calgary teammates in Nikita Zadorov and Elias Lindholm, and that kind of familiarity can matter when you are choosing your next city.

There is also a hockey argument, not just a friendship one. The Bruins still have their core pieces in place, and NHL.com's roster shows the names Murphy referenced as selling points, including Jeremy Swayman, Charlie McAvoy, and David Pastrnak.

Then there is the youth angle that makes the “retool” label feel less scary. Boston acquired Fraser Minten in the Brandon Carlo trade, and Daily Faceoff has top prospect James Hagens leading their pool after being drafted seventh overall in 2025.

None of this confirms the trade is done, and there is still no official announcement from either club as of this morning. What it does confirm is the biggest obstacle, extension willingness, may have moved, and that is the turn that puts Boston right back in the middle of it.
