Boston Bruins signed Jonathan Aspirot to a two year extension, betting on his steady blue line play and bargain cap hit.
The club announced Sunday that Aspirot agreed to a two-year NHL contract extension with an $887,500 cap hit, a tidy reward for a guy who started this season as an afterthought. The deal runs through 2027-28, per the team's release.
Back in October, he didn't make the opening roster out of camp and was assigned back to the Providence Bruins.
Instead, injuries opened a door, and Aspirot kicked it off the hinges, starting with his recall when Hampus Lindholm landed on injured reserve. From there, his shifts got heavier and his minutes stayed.
Aspirot has played 25 NHL games already, scoring two goals with one assist, and his plus-15 sits at the top of Boston's roster. He's also averaging 16:24 a night, which tells you the staff trusts him.
Jonathan Aspirot extension rewards Bruins blue line grit
As a Bruins fan, I love this kind of signing, because it screams earned, not gifted.
Aspirot isn't out there running a power play or trying cross-ice hero passes. He kills plays early, keeps the front of the net from getting messy, and makes the simple exit that lets the forwards breathe.
The numbers behind the “not flashy” label are legit, too. He's a 6-foot, 212-pound left shot who has already banked real pro miles, with 297 AHL games and 128 points across Providence, Calgary, and Belleville.
That background matters because it explains why he doesn't look rattled in NHL traffic. He was originally signed by Ottawa as a free agent in 2020, and he's had to scrap for every promotion since.
The extension also fits where Boston is right now. They need cost-controlled defenders who can handle real minutes, especially when injuries start chewing through the lineup in January.
If Aspirot keeps playing this calm, the next milestone is simple, keep stacking good nights and make this “surprise story” feel permanent by spring.
