Fraser Minten earned a power-play promotion, and the Boston Bruins are leaning on him hard with the Stadium Series looming and Pavel Zacha out.
Boston’s last two games brought wins, but the injuries piled up anyway. Elias Lindholm is still sidelined, and Zacha’s upper-body issue has forced real lineup surgery.
Marco Sturm could have pulled the simple lever and called someone up from Providence. Instead, Saturday’s practice hinted that the Bruins want to solve this internally.
Minten is the obvious bet because he’s been on a tear lately. He’s popped eight goals and 16 points over his last 15 games, and the pace looks real.
That’s why the next step matters. At practice, Minten rotated in with the top power-play unit, a pretty loud promotion for a young center.
It’s also practical. With Lindholm and Zacha both banged up, Boston needs a new touch guy on the man advantage, and there are only so many players who can handle that pressure.
Sturm has talked about staying calm and not forcing a recall, so this feels like the compromise. You keep the roster stable, but you still change the pecking order.
Minten is 21, drafted in 2022 in the second round, 38th overall, by the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he plays like a center who trusts his reads.
He also just backed it up on Thursday. Minten posted a goal and two assists in the 6-3 win over Philadelphia, and that kind of night earns more looks.
Fraser Minten puts pressure on the Boston Bruins power play
Minten fits the top unit because he can keep pucks alive and make the short play under heat. That’s huge when the first setup gets stuffed and you need a second touch fast.
It also takes some weight off David Pastrnak, because opponents can’t just overplay the one-timer lane if the bumper spot is making plays.
The timing is perfect, too, because Boston wants its best line to stay together at even strength after that Flyers game. Special teams is where you can “promote” someone without breaking what already works.
Minten has deserved the opportunity. Now he has to grab it before the standings, and the Stadium Series spotlight gets even brighter.
Will Fraser Minten’s power-play promotion help the Boston Bruins without Pavel Zacha?
