The Boston Bruins and Zdeno Chara are in jersey retirement mode, and the Seattle Kraken are next on the schedule.
Thursday at TD Garden, Boston will retire No. 33 before the puck drops against the Seattle Kraken.
It is the franchise's top honor, and it has been a long time coming for the captain era.
On Wednesday morning, the Bruins started the celebration early in a pretty clever way. They swapped their X profile picture to a Bruins logo stamped with “33,” plus “Zdeno Chara” and “2006-2020” right on the badge.
That date range hits you because it was basically an entire identity for this team. Chara captained Boston for 14 seasons, played 1,023 regular-season games as a Bruin, and put up 481 points, massive numbers for a defenseman with shutdown assignments.
Zdeno Chara and Boston Bruins nostalgia hits
As a fan, I love that they kept it simple, because the logo says what everyone feels this week. The number alone brings back the heavy minutes, the calm bench, and the idea that nobody got a free inch.
Chara was not just big, he was effective, and the hardware proves it. He won the Norris Trophy in 2009, then lifted the Stanley Cup with Boston in 2011, anchoring a group that could suffocate the slot and clear rebounds fast.
He arrived in 2006 as a free agent, but the backstory still matters, a third-round pick, 56th overall by the New York Islanders in 1996.
Now he is 48, a Hall of Famer, and still tied to Boston's heartbeat in a way few athletes ever manage.
Thursday night should feel less like a ceremony and more like a thank-you note, and I cannot wait to hear that building when 33 finally goes up.
Do you like this honouring for Zdeno Chara by the Boston Bruins?
