The Boston Bruins and GM Don Sweeney are officially dangling top prospect Matthew Poitras on the trade block ahead of the March 6 deadline.
General Manager Don Sweeney is hunting for immediate upgrades. According to insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the front office is heavily pursuing a top-six forward and a reliable right-shot defenseman.
To get quality talent in the NHL, you must give up quality assets. And Poitras is currently the most attractive trade chip sitting in the Boston system.
The 21-year-old center is spending the majority of this season developing his transition game down in the AHL. He has recorded nine goals and 30 points through 47 games for the Providence Bruins.
But cracking the main roster has been a massive struggle. He has only suited up for three games with the big club this year, scoring a single goal before the Olympic break.
Sturm is running a tight, veteran-heavy locker room right now. Boston is battling for wild card positioning in the Eastern Conference with 69 points, and they desperately need proven contributors who deliver solid execution under pressure.
Poitras being used as trade bait
Poitras still possesses incredible upside. Over his NHL career, he has proven he can handle the pace of the NHL, but he needs a fresh start to truly unlock his offensive output.
Rebuilding organizations are absolutely starving for young centers on entry-level contracts. Sending him to a team selling off veteran rentals makes perfect sense for both sides.
Finding a rugged defender to balance the blue line is expensive. Sweeney knows the asking price for reliable defensive depth usually starts with a first-round pick or a highly rated prospect.
Because the Bruins want to protect their future draft capital, moving a promising youngster who is currently blocked on the depth chart is the logical play.
The Black and Gold are pushing their chips into the middle of the table. A blockbuster deal is brewing in Massachusetts.
If Sweeney pulls the trigger, Poitras will instantly become a foundational piece for a rival franchise. The next eight days will completely define the Boston playoff trajectory.
Should the Bruins trade Matthew Poitras for a top-six forward?
