Bruce Cassidy is out in Vegas, and John Tortorella is in. For Bruins fans, Marco Sturm just watched an old Boston debate swing back into view.
The Golden Knights announced Sunday, March 29, that Cassidy had been relieved of his duties and that Tortorella had been named head coach. Kelly McCrimmon made it official.
That headline lands differently in Boston than it does almost anywhere else. Cassidy was still a hot-button name around the Bruins because plenty of fans never bought Don Sweeney's decision to move on from him in June 2022.
Now Vegas has done the same thing. The timing matters. Cassidy was hired by Vegas on June 14, 2022, then lost the job on March 29, 2026.
Yes, he won a Stanley Cup there in 2023. That banner isn't going anywhere, and nobody in Boston should pretend it doesn't matter.
But this is the other half of the story Bruins fans know well. Cassidy can raise a team's floor fast, tighten the structure, and get results. He also tends to wear thin when the message stops landing.
Boston heard all the outrage when Sweeney made the move. The Bruins had relieved Cassidy on June 6, 2022, after he had coached the club since February 7, 2017.
Vegas just handed Boston a familiar verdict
That's why this Vegas decision feels so loud back in New England. The Bruins didn't fire some coach who immediately turned into a long-term fit somewhere else. They fired a good coach whose shelf life still looks real.
Cassidy's Bruins run was loaded with wins. He finished with 245 victories in 399 games behind the Boston bench, which is why the move felt risky at the time.
And his Vegas run was not some instant collapse, either. As recently as November 5, 2025, the Golden Knights listed Cassidy's record there at 153-75-30.
That's what makes this more interesting than a simple gotcha. Boston wasn't wrong about Cassidy's coaching value, and Vegas wasn't wrong to hire him. But the Bruins may have been right to believe the room had reached its limit.
That idea got mocked in 2022 because fans saw a playoff team and a respected coach. What they may have missed was the longer view. Sometimes a voice has real juice for a while, then it doesn't.
Now Vegas has turned to Tortorella, one of the few coaches in the league with a reputation even sharper than Cassidy's. That tells you the Golden Knights think this needs a jolt, not a tune-up.
For Bruins fans, this doesn't rewrite history. Cassidy was a successful coach in Boston. It just makes Sweeney's call look a lot less reckless than it did the day the Bruins made it.
Did the Bruins end up making the right call by moving on from Bruce Cassidy?
