A mock trade circulating Saturday has the Boston Bruins landing Nikita Kucherov from Tampa Bay, and the price is steep.

IceMetrix floated the package: Pavel Zacha, Mason Lohrei, prospect Dean Letourneau, a 2027 first-round pick and a 2028 fourth-round pick, all to the Lightning for Kucherov.

Boston plays tonight against Chicago, and the Bruins are 9-4-1 and sit first in the Atlantic Division. They are also coming off two straight losses, the latest a 4-1 defeat in St. Louis on Thursday.

Tampa Bay isn't in a sell mode either. The Lightning are 8-3-1 and beat Winnipeg 6-4 on Thursday, and they play at Nashville tonight.

Kucherov has 15 points in 12 games this season, with 4 goals and 11 assists. He is 33, and over his NHL career he has 1,138 points in 891 games.

That is the kind of number that makes any general manager pick up the phone. Don Sweeney would be calling a team that has no reason to blink.

Zacha is the piece that hurts most. The center has 8 points in 13 games and is a +4, and he sits on the top line with David Pastrnak.

We covered Pavel Zacha's extension outlook with the Bruins earlier this week, and a new report said a deal before free agency was getting harder to see. A trade like this would make that question moot.

Would Lohrei and a first-round pick be too much?

Lohrei has 2 goals and 3 assists in 14 games, with a +4 rating. The 25-year-old defenseman is a 6-foot-5 right-now piece on the blue line, not a throw-in.

Letourneau is the wild card. The 6-foot-7 center was the 25th overall pick in 2024 and has not played an NHL game, so his value is all projection.

Add the 2027 first and the fourth in 2028, and that is a lot of depth leaving a roster that is leading its division. Boston would be paying for a star while thinning the group that got it to 9-4-1.

IceMetrix put it to its followers directly, asking who says no. Tampa Bay's side of the ledger looks easy: it gets a center, a defenseman, a prospect and a first.

IceMetrix asked who says no to the deal, and the question is built to spark an argument.

My view: Boston should say no. A team first in its division with a +18 goal differential doesn't empty the cupboard for a 33-year-old, even one this good.

Kucherov's deal runs through 2026-27 and he is set to hit free agency at expiry, so any suitor would be buying a rental unless it signs him. Boston hosts Chicago tonight, and Tampa is in Nashville.
