The Boston Bruins are turning up the heat ahead of Friday's trade deadline, and they are bringing their premium assets to the negotiating table.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, general manager Don Sweeney has officially reengaged with the Vancouver Canucks regarding a blockbuster deal for gritty winger Conor Garland.
The Canucks are currently juggling multiple offers, including intense, ongoing negotiations with the New York Islanders.
To cut to the front of the line and outbid his Eastern Conference rivals, Sweeney is reportedly discussing a massive package that could include highly-touted youngsters Matthew Poitras and/or Mason Lohrei.
For head coach Marco Strum, securing a player of Garland's caliber would provide an immediate "bump" to a lineup searching for consistent 5-on-5 secondary scoring.
Garland's relentless motor, exceptional edge work, and crisp transition game make him the perfect fit for Boston's heavy, forecheck-driven system. He brings the exact kind of "solid execution" required to survive the gruelling playoff gauntlet.
Don Sweeney willing to sacrifice the future for Garland?
Parting with Poitras or Lohrei is a massive gamble for the Bruins' front office. Poitras has already shown flashes of brilliance as a potential top-six center of the future, while Lohrei possesses the size and puck-moving ability coveted by every NHL franchise.
However, Vancouver GM Patrik Allvin is orchestrating a roster retool and won't part with Garland without securing a blue-chip asset to build around.
Boston is operating in a strict win-now window. With the March 6 cutoff just 48 hours away, the Bruins are clearly looking for a "clean slate" to ignite their offense.
If Sweeney is truly willing to mortgage a top-tier piece of his prospect pool, Garland could be wearing Black and Gold by the weekend. The stakes have never been higher in Beantown.
Should the Bruins trade Matthew Poitras or Mason Lohrei for Conor Garland?
