Chris Johnston says December 1st is now a massive real deadline for Simon Edvinsson, and he named the Bruins as one of the teams that make sense.
The Red Wings defenseman is listed on IR with a contract dispute, out indefinitely, and he has not played a game this season. Johnston, via NHL Rumour Report, laid out where he could land if Detroit moves him.
Johnston noted that Edvinsson has to have a contract that day, and that a San Jose, an Anaheim and a Boston all make sense.
San Jose is the most likely destination if he is traded, according to Johnston. That detail matters. Boston is on the list, but it isn't the favorite in this version of the story.
Nothing in the post says the Bruins have made an offer, and nothing says a trade is close. This is a rumor with a date attached, not a done deal.
The Bruins' interest has been building all week. Back on October 30, we told you the Bruins poking around Simon Edvinsson more than Dylan Larkin.
The Hockey News then reported that Boston is among the teams interested in Larkin and Edvinsson, both Red Wings.
Why the Edvinsson clock matters in Boston
The Larkin side of this has moved fast too. Frank Seravalli said Tuesday that Boston wants a crack at the center but isn't on his preferred list.
Then Elliotte Friedman said this morning that Larkin considered changing his list of teams, and that he suspects the Bruins are among the clubs pushing to get in. Our Friedman report on the Larkin chase has the details.
Boston doesn't look like a team desperate for a jolt. The Bruins are 12-4-1 with 25 points, 2nd in the NHL and 1st in the Atlantic, and they've won 3 straight after a 6-2 win at Pittsburgh on Thursday.
That makes any Red Wings talk a question of ambition. General manager Don Sweeney has a first-place team, and a top-of-the-roster swing would be a choice, not a rescue. Chasing a player who hasn't suited up all season, though, is a hard sell to me when the group is winning like this.
Detroit is 7-7-3 and sits 8th in the Atlantic, so the Red Wings have their own pressure, and the Edvinsson standoff only adds to it.
Boston hosts Florida on Sunday, but the date to watch is December 1st.
