The Boston Bruins desperately need help down the middle, and centers Matt Duchene and Brock Nelson should be offseason targets for the team. If Don Sweeney fails to make an offer, he's failed as a GM and should be fired.

The Boston Bruins have already begun to reset their lineup, as during the March 7th Trade Deadline, we saw the move of core pieces out of the lineup.

Those pieces included center Charlie Coyle, and without Coyle, the team is lacking any meaningful depth down the middle.

Organizationally, what's their biggest, pressing need? Center. If you don't see them identify the signing of a center and they're swinging for the fence with high-scoring wingers, it's flawed... You're just spinning your tires.

An issue GM Don Sweeney should address, according to NHL Insider Jimmy Murphy of the Sick Podcast.

In order to strengthen the ranks down the middle, Sweeney should pursue free agents like Brock Nelson, and Matt Duchene in the offseason.

The Bruins will have $11 million in cap space to work with, which should allow them to make a contract offer to one or the other.

While this figure is prior to the salary cap being raised, the team needs help big time down the middle, as Casey Mittelstadt has scored only 4 points in 12 games with the Bruins. And Elias Lindholm, an offseason acquisition has failed to perform up to expectations with 39 points this year.

Brock Nelson could add the kind of scoring depth needs for the team to push deep into the playoffs, as he's had three 30+ goal seasons in the last three years.

While Matt Duchene while be another worthwhile top-six center to add, scoring 78 points (29 goals, 49 assists) in 76 games with the Dallas Stars.

If Sweeney fails to explore these UFA options in July, he isn't serious about taking the team to the playoffs again.
