The Boston Bruins finished their regular season at 45-27-10 with 100 points, on a two-game winning streak, and GM Don Sweeney closes the books on 2025-26 with two players currently without a contract for next season.
Neither situation is a crisis. But both need answers before July.
The first name is Viktor Arvidsson. He's 33, played 69 games, and posted 25 goals and 29 assists for 54 points on a $4 million cap hit.
That's a quietly excellent season from a veteran winger. He finished his last 10 games with 13 points and went plus-4. He was one of the more consistent forwards on this roster all year.
The real question is whether Sweeney and coach Marco Sturm want to run that back at a number that works for both sides.
At 33, Arvidsson won't get younger. But forwards who produce 54 points and go plus-20 don't grow on trees either.
Peeke's UFA status adds a decision on the blue line too
The second open file belongs to Andrew Peeke on defence. He's 28, played 77 games, and finished with 14 points and a minus-12 rating on a $2.75 million cap hit.
The minus-12 is hard to ignore. He held a spot in the lineup all season, but the defensive numbers were rough. His last 10 games produced just 1 point and a minus-5.
Peeke is young enough to rebuild value somewhere, but Boston has no obligation to be the team that pays for his upside.
Meanwhile, the core of this roster is locked in and expensive. David Pastrnak had 100 points. Morgan Geekie scored 39 goals. Pavel Zacha posted 65 points with 11 power-play goals. Charlie McAvoy put up 61 points from the blue line.
The Bruins scored 272 goals this season and went 5-3-2 in their last 10. This is a legitimate contender, and Sweeney knows it.
The cap sits tight. Boston is carrying $94.6 million in projected cap hit this season with 889,000 in projected space. Once UFA and RFA slots clear, there's real room to maneuver this summer.
Bringing Arvidsson back at the right number keeps a proven top-six piece in the building. Letting him walk opens the door to someone younger but removes a guy who just scored 25 goals at 33.
That's the kind of decision that looks obvious in hindsight. It never is in the moment.
Should the Bruins bring back Viktor Arvidsson for at least one more season?
