On Sunday, Calgary flipped Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights in that monster deal that also sent Whitecloud to the Flames.
Boston was linked to Andersson for days, so seeing Calgary land an NHL defender back naturally made Bruins fans wonder if they could flip him, especially considering they are focused on bringing in future assets.
On Monday, a Bruins-focused social account pointed to Friedman's latest 32 Thoughts chat and said he tossed out a simple line, “Zach Whitecloud looks like a Bruin,” while also noting it was pure spitballing.
That's important context, because it's not a report of active talks, it's a theory about fit.
Zach Whitecloud the Bruins next trade target?
As a fan, I'll admit the idea hits, because Boston always seems to love sturdy, no-panic, right-shot defenders.
Whitecloud is 29, shoots right, and he's built like an NHL grinder at 6-foot-2 and around 210 pounds.
He's also on a manageable deal, with a $2.75 million cap hit through 2027-28.
This season, he has 7 points in 47 games with the Vegas Golden Knights, which isn't bad for a sturdy defenseman.
That's not why you'd trade for him anyway, you're acquiring him for the dirty work like penalty-kill steadiness, defensive-zone detail, and minutes you can trust when the schedule gets ugly.
If the Flames decide to stockpile more futures, a mid-tier cap hit on a proven defender can become a quick extra pick.
For Boston, the appeal is cleaner than the Andersson chase. Whitecloud wouldn't cost a blockbuster package, and he wouldn't force the Bruins to gamble on an extension before the trade call.
The Bruins are looking to make some moves. It will be interesting to see what Don Sweeney has up his sleeve as the trade deadline gets closer.
Would you want the Boston Bruins to trade for Zach Whitecloud if the price is reasonable?
