Boston Bruins goalie vibes shifted when Jeremy Swayman praised Joonas Korpisalo after Detroit, even with trade rumors swirling.
Tuesday night, Boston blanked the Detroit Red Wings 3-0 at TD Garden and extended its winning streak to four games. Swayman made 24 saves for his first shutout of the season.
The win also made it back-to-back shutouts for the Bruins as a team, which still feels rare in today's NHL. Korpisalo set it up Sunday with a 27-save 1-0 shutout over the Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston's first shutout of the season.
That's why the goalie hug after the horn got everyone talking again, because it used to be Swayman and Linus Ullmark's calling card. Now it's Swayman and Korpisalo, and the whole thing looks like a new friendship forming in real time.
The context makes Swayman's comments even louder, because Korpisalo's season hasn't been smooth. NBC Sports Boston and CBS both listed him at 6-7-0 with a .880 save percentage and a 3.63 goals-against average before his recent rebound.
Add in the business side and you get the rumors, too. RG.org recently reported Boston has been gauging the trade market on Korpisalo, while his $4 million cap hit runs through 2027-28.
Jeremy Swayman and Joonas Korpisalo feel like a real tandem
As a Bruins fan, it's nice when the room feels tight instead of tense.
After the win, Swayman didn't dodge the question about his partner, he leaned into it.
“The best goalie partner I could ask for. It's a joy to come to the rink with him every day. You know he's going to compete, and you know he's going to do everything he can to help the Bruins win.”
That kind of public backing matters, because goalies live in their own world, but the locker room still reads the temperature. When your starter says that out loud, it tells management the partnership is working.
None of it guarantees Korpisalo's name won't pop up again as the deadline noise builds. But after two straight shutouts and a quote like that, it's harder to treat him like a simple problem to solve.
Boston has momentum right now, and the next milestone is keeping it through the next start, whoever gets the crease.
Do you think the Boston Bruins should keep Joonas Korpisalo after Jeremy Swayman's comments?
