Marco Sturm put Lindy Ruff in the middle of Boston's Game 1 buildup, and that changed the tone before puck drop.
This wasn't quiet playoff talk from the Bruins bench.
Sturm stepped out Sunday and made it clear he wanted the series framed around Boston's edge before the opener against the Sabres.
He started with identity, and he didn't soften it at all.
“We know how we have to play, we are gonna be ready to go, we're excited,” said Sturm. “We are bigger, stronger, we are more physical.”
That kind of quote travels fast in a playoff room. It doesn't land like routine coachspeak when the other bench is already wired for Game 1.
Then Sturm took it one step farther and brought Ruff directly into the conversation.
That's where this stopped being simple confidence and turned into something Buffalo can use.
His next line put the spotlight right on the matchup battle.
“In the past Lindy was not really a big matchup guy,” said Sturm. “He did his thing so we'll see where it goes, maybe he does it different in the playoffs. But we don't really care.”
Marco Sturm and the Bruins just made Game 1 more personal
That's the part Ruff can carry straight into his locker room. Boston didn't just say it was ready.
The Bruins questioned how Buffalo's coach might handle the chess match once the series starts.
Now the pressure shifts back onto Sturm's bench. If the Bruins own the pace early, he looks like a coach who nailed the mood around his group.
If they get pushed around or lose the matchup game, every word comes back on Boston. That's the risk when a coach raises the temperature before the first faceoff.
This is why the story matters beyond one quote. Ruff didn't need extra motivation in the playoffs, but Sturm handed the Sabres a clean message anyway.
It also gives Buffalo's veterans something direct to answer on the ice. Forecheck pressure, net-front battles, and line matching now carry a little more edge than they did a few hours earlier.
Sturm wanted confidence out in the open before Game 1. He got that. But he also made sure this series starts with pride attached to every shift.
Did Marco Sturm give the Sabres extra fuel before Game 1?
