Bruins coach Marco Sturm pushed a clear message to David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy as both inch toward returning during the three game road trip.

The team practiced Monday with rare optimism, and Sturm made sure his two stars understood his expectations.

His tone was steady, stressing readiness over excitement, even as the Bruins continue battling through injuries and tight standings.

Sturm met with Pastrnak and McAvoy before the trip and kept it simple.

“Make sure you're ready to go. That's all that matters right now,” he told them.

Pastrnak has missed five straight games, while McAvoy remains out since November 15 after taking a slap shot to the face, which required facial surgery.

Pastrnak confirmed earlier that he expects to “play at some point on the trip,” while McAvoy echoed that hope, skating in full drills and wearing a protective bubble.

Their presence alone lifted the room, yet Sturm insisted their return must match Boston's current rhythm.

He expanded on that point Monday.

“We're playing good hockey,” Sturm said. “Whoever comes in, they have to match that level.”

Boston has leaned on depth players like Casey Mittelstadt, Pavel Zacha and Mason Lohrei to maintain structure during this injury stretch.

The Bruins want both stars back, but not before they meet the full physical and tactical threshold.

“We want them back, of course. But it's about being ready. Not almost ready - fully ready,” he said.

If both meet Sturm's standard, this road trip could mark the turning point of Boston's season. Reinforcements are finally close, but the message stays unchanged. Earn the spot, then elevate the group.
