Toronto Sun columnist Steve Simmons is potentially setting the ice on fire in Scotiabank Arena with new revelations regarding star Mitch Marner's broken relationship with the Maple Leafs.

While we know Simmons primarily as a journalist who likes to press fans' and players' buttons, a controversial figure, there are instances where a broken clock can be right.

Twice a day remember?

Well according to Simmons of the Toronto Sun, Marner was asked by GM Brad Treliving if he'd waive his no-trade clause to head to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Mitch Marner took the night to sleep on it.

For all he talks about wanting to be a Maple Leaf for life, his only team, his only town, when he was asked about waiving the no-trade arrangement in his contract, he didn't answer immediately.

Marner didn't know that the trade was for Mikko Rantanen, but would choose to remain in Toronto, his hometown.

After all was said and done, Marner and his camp haven't even begun contract negotiations with the Maple Leafs.

"The notion - he won't negotiate while the season is going on - is pretty much modern-day drivel. Players don't tend to be involved much in contract negotiations until they get close to the deal being signed or one walked away from. The agent does the work."

Could this be a sign of a relationship that has been broken by GM Treliving and the team?

We know Marner will be looking for top-dollar pay like his teammate and superstar Auston Matthews who earns a cool $13.25 million AAV.

Marner will attempt a secure a larger percentage of the Maple Leafs' salary cap during negotiations.

There's news that the team and Marner aren't discussing numbers should give fans pause, and GM's time to prep plans to acquire the star forward.

This is a moment where GM Brad Treliving and the team have failed to keep Marner's trust and faith in the organization, that they'll take care of him.

The Bruins could step in and make an offer in July when the bidding begins if he doesn't sign with the Leafs beforehand.
