Morgan Geekie and the Boston Bruins family matter story finally has a clear, happy ending.
Saturday against the New York Rangers, Geekie left after the first period for what the team called a family matter. Boston still rolled to a 10-2 win, but the bench felt smaller without him.
After the game, head coach Marco Sturm confirmed everything was “all good” with Geekie and his family, and he didn't expand beyond that.
When Geekie then missed Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the silence only grew louder.
That's the tension with these moments, hockey stops feeling important fast, and fans just want to hear that life is okay. It was, and now we know exactly why.
Morgan Geekie gives Boston Bruins a joyful update
As a fan, I'll take a missing shift every time if it means a healthy mom and baby.
Geekie broke the silence through Scott McLaughlin, and the details were as real as it gets. “Morgan Geekie's wife, Emma, was at Saturday's game, so they both had to leave mid-game. Baby Max arrived a few hours later. Everybody's doing well.
“Obviously it's been on my mind for a while, just because it's very unpredictable, but my wife's a champ.”
The Bruins had already shown they can score in bunches without him, but Geekie still drives a ton of their nightly offense. He's expected back Tuesday against Detroit, which is the best kind of return.
Before stepping away, Geekie had piled up 25 goals and 41 points in 45 games, and both CBS Sports and ESPN list the same totals. He's 27, a 2017 third-round pick, and he's turned into Boston's most reliable finisher this season.
On the ice, his value is simple, he gets inside, wins pucks, and makes lines work even when the power play goes cold. Off the ice, this was bigger than any standings swing.
Do you think Morgan Geekie will break his goal-scoring drought in his return tonight?
