Jay Leach is out in Boston after 1 season under Marco Sturm, and he's already landed a new bench job for 2026-27.
The former Bruins assistant is heading to Hartford as head coach of the Wolf Pack, giving him a quick reset after Boston's playoff exit.
That move didn't come out of nowhere. Once the Bruins were bounced in 6 games by Buffalo, staff changes felt likely, especially with the blue line getting exposed too often.
Leach was one of the first names tied to a move, and that fit the mood around the organization. Boston's defensive play never looked settled for long stretches.
He stayed on through a lot of turbulence behind the bench. Leach worked under Jim Montgomery, then Joe Sacco, then remained for Marco Sturm's 1st season.
That kind of turnover matters. When assistants survive coaching changes, it usually means they still carry value around the league.
Hartford gives Leach a fast landing spot
Hartford now gives Leach something Boston no longer could: his own room, his own bench, and a direct shot to run a team again.
That's a meaningful turn for a coach whose track record in development has followed him for years. He had already built credibility in Providence before leaving for Seattle.
His return to Boston looked like a chance to stabilize the Bruins' structure. Instead, it became a short stay that ended once the season did.
The timing also connects cleanly with the Rangers' orbit. Sacco moved to New York, and Leach now lands with the Rangers' top American Hockey League affiliate.
From Boston's side, this says plenty about where Sturm wants to take the staff. A 1st-year head coach getting deeper into his own setup usually means fewer holdovers.
For Leach, this is less about a fallback job and more about re-entry. Head coaching work in Hartford puts him back in the lane that can lead to another NHL chance.
And for the Bruins, it closes the book on another familiar face from a season that had just enough progress to make the changes sting a little more.
Did the Bruins make the right call by moving on from Jay Leach?
