Charlie McAvoy was on the receiving end of a nasty head shot in Bruins vs Panthers, and the NHL Player Safety verdict Thursday morning lit a fuse in Boston.
The play came in the first period, with McAvoy skating the puck through the neutral zone and trying to push pace.
Florida forward Sandis Vilmanis landed a high and late hit, and the contact snapped McAvoy’s head back in real time.
McAvoy went down, stayed there for a beat, then headed down the tunnel while the building got loud.
Boston’s bench boiled over, because it looked like the kind of clip that usually earns more than a shrug.
The report making the rounds Thursday is brutal for Bruins fans: there will be no hearing, and no supplemental discipline for Vilmanis.
Hearing there will be no supplemental discipline for Sandis Vilmanis for his flying elbow to the head of Charlie McAvoy. No injury, no problem I guess.
He returned in the second period, which is the only reason this isn’t full panic in Boston today.
McAvoy has 4-34-38 on the season, and the Bruins simply do not have another defenseman who can absorb those minutes cleanly.
NHL Player Safety makes a joke of themselves once again
The NHL DPoS has once again made a joke of themselves.
After countlessly stating they want to get rid of hits like this, they decide that it doesn't warrant any further discipline.
The message from the DPoS seems like “no injury, no problem,” and that is exactly what has people seeing red.
The good thing is that Charlie McAvoy ended up returning to the game, and he will be focusing on the upcoming Olympics now.
Should NHL Player Safety have given Sandis Vilmanis a hearing for the Charlie McAvoy head shot?
