Boston Bruins and Rasmus Andersson trade talk now hinges on a contract extension, per Elliotte Friedman.
That's the major complication, because Friedman's latest note suggests Boston won't chase this as a straight rental. If there isn't an extension in place, the Bruins are not believed to be interested in trading for Andersson.
Elliotte Friedman: Re Rasmus Andersson: The Bruins are not believed to be interested in this without an extension - Saturday Headlines (1/17)
It's easy to understand why that stance matters. Andersson is the type of right-shot defender every contender wants, and if you're Calgary you want contenders bidding like crazy, not hesitating over term.
But for Boston, the math is the story. Andersson carries a $4.55 million cap hit and his current deal runs through 2025-26, which makes him expensive to acquire if he can walk later.
Boston Bruins demand an Andersson extension first
As a fan, I actually respect the discipline, because nothing wrecks a retool faster than paying premium assets for a short stay.
The other piece is leverage, and Friedman's reporting also helps explain it. If Boston is the only team permitted to talk extension right now, that's a real edge, but only if they can get numbers that make sense.
Calgary can still play poker here, though. If other teams are willing to gamble on a rental, or believe they can sell Andersson after the trade, the Flames can push Boston's price upward.
And the player's production is exactly why it stays expensive. PuckPedia lists him at 10 goals and 30 points in 48 games, while ESPN shows 10 goals and 29 points, basically the same impact with slightly different timing.
So this isn't a “do the Bruins want him” question, it's “do the Bruins want him at this cost without control.” Until an extension is real, Boston's answer sounds like a firm no, and that single condition could decide the whole Andersson saga.
Should the Boston Bruins refuse to trade for Rasmus Andersson without an extension in place?
