Robert Thomas to the Boston Bruins is suddenly looking shaky, because the Minnesota Wild may have the kind of blockbuster ammo Boston can’t match.
Boston has been linked to Thomas all season for the same reason everyone wants him, he’s a legit top-line center. The problem is St. Louis is not shopping him for “nice pieces.”
One report says the Blues want a top prospect, a first-round pick, and an NHL player. That’s where the Bruins start sweating, because their best chips are either untouchables especially given the fact they are in a retool.
Meanwhile, Minnesota can put a premium goalie prospect on the table and not blink.
NHL Trade Rumors floated a Wild package built around Jesper Wallstedt, a 2027 first-round pick, and Ryan Hartman for Thomas.
Wallstedt is 23, drafted in 2021 in the first round by the Minnesota Wild, and he’s not a “throw-in.” He’s even been producing like a real NHL answer, with a 2.72 GAA and .914 save percentage this season.
For Boston, the harsh reality is you don’t have a Wallstedt-level prospect to headline a Thomas offer.
The Bruins have been good enough to buy this season, but they aren't "real contenders" so throwing a package like this at the Blues wouldn't make sense.
Wild to take Robert Thomas from the Bruins
Thomas is producing again, and he’s the type who makes wingers better just by existing on the ice.
Minnesota’s urgency makes sense too, because the Wild are 34-14-10 and look like a team ready to swing big and make a run for the Stanley Cup.
Unfortunately for the Bruins, it's not looking good for them. They wouldn't have a big enough package to beat out the Minnesota Wild.
If this is the case, the Bruins would just have to turn their attention to other cheaper options that could make an impact for them this season.
Will the Minnesota Wild beat the Boston Bruins to Robert Thomas before the NHL trade deadline?
