Two Boston Bruins are wearing Finland colors Sunday afternoon. Henri Jokiharju and Joonas Korpisalo headline the Finnish roster against Switzerland in the World Championship gold-medal game.
Puck drops at 2:20 PM ET. The biggest non-NHL hockey stage on the planet, with two Boston jerseys hanging in the Finnish locker room.
Jokiharju is the heartbeat of that Finnish blue line. The 26-year-old defenseman is playing the heaviest minutes of his international career on home ice in Helsinki.
His NHL season tells you why Finland leans on him. 41 games with Boston, 15 points, plus-2, a steady $3 million cap hit that bought Don Sweeney exactly what he wanted.
Korpisalo is the wild card. The 32-year-old netminder has been backing the tournament for Finland after a bumpy year in Boston where he posted a .894 save percentage across 31 starts.
But international hockey resets everything. Bigger ice, shorter series, smaller margins. A goalie who looked ordinary in the NHL can suddenly look like a brick wall when the format changes.
Marco Sturm watches two of his players chase a medal he never won as a coach
The optics matter for the Bruins. Boston finished the regular season at 45-27-10, good for 100 points, eighth in the overall standings.
Marco Sturm has not coached a meaningful Bruins game since April 14, when his team blanked the Devils 4-0 to close things out. Now his Finnish defenseman is logging top-pair minutes against the Swiss.
Switzerland is not a soft draw. The Swiss have built one of the deepest non-traditional rosters in the tournament and have NHL talent at every position.
If Korpisalo gets the start and steals the gold, it changes the conversation around his Bruins future. A backup with a Worlds medal carries different weight in a trade conversation.
Jokiharju is in the final stretch of his deal. A gold medal performance against Switzerland adds another data point ahead of contract talks Sweeney will have to navigate this summer.
So who blinks first when Finland and Switzerland drop the puck? One of these two Bruins is about to find out on the biggest stage hockey offers outside the Stanley Cup.
Will Joonas Korpisalo outduel Switzerland and bring gold home to Finland?
