Conor Ryan just reported that the Bruins have placed James Hagens on injured reserve and recalled Mikey Eyssimont from Providence.
It's a significant development for a rookie who had been one of the best stories of Boston's fast start. Hagens left the game in Pittsburgh after a Girard crosscheck, as we reported on James Hagens leaving that game, and Marco Sturm said afterward he had no word on his status.
Ryan keeps it short in the post, and the news is all there:
The team has not given a diagnosis or a timeline, so the reason behind the IR move is unknown for now. What we do know is that the Bruins have a roster spot to fill, and they've filled it with a forward who has been scorching the American league.
Hagens, the seventh overall pick in 2025, has 6 goals and 6 assists in 17 games and a +7 rating. He was in the Calder conversation.
Boston isn't wobbling. The Bruins are 12-4-1, first in the Atlantic, and riding a three-game winning streak after the 6-2 win in Pittsburgh. But losing a 20-year-old center producing at that clip is not something a team shrugs off, whatever the standings say.
Who is Mikey Eyssimont, and why is he back?
Michael Eyssimont is a 30-year-old center with 269 NHL games behind him. He hasn't played for Boston this season.
In Providence he has 13 goals, and Mark Divver pointed out how absurd the shooting percentage is:
Thirteen goals on 42 shots is 31 percent, a number that will cool off eventually. But he arrives on a hot streak, and last night he scored a natural hat trick in 1:43 in Providence's 5-4 win over Hamilton.
Nothing in the sheet tells us where he slots in, and we won't guess at lines or who sits. Sturm hasn't said, and the earlier Sturm's patience with Hagens comments now read like a coach protecting a young player he liked a lot.
The Bruins host the Panthers on Sunday, November 8, and Sturm will be asked about Hagens again. Whether he gives a timeline is the question hanging over that room.
