Marco Sturm said it plainly at practice today: James Hagens is "definitely going to be a few weeks" for the Bruins.
The coach didn't stop there, adding that it's "very unfortunate" and that the rookie "needs some time to heal, that's all." Until now, all we had was the IR move and a seven-day minimum.
The Bruins' official account shared Sturm's full reaction, and it's the first real timeline we've heard.
Jim McBride put it a little differently, reporting that Hagens will be out at least "a couple of weeks" according to Sturm. Either way, this isn't a week-to-week blip.
The injury traces back to Thursday in Pittsburgh, where Hagens took a cross-check to the lower back from Samuel Girard. The Bruins still won that game 6-2, but they lost their most exciting young forward in the process.
The timing stings. Hagens has 6 goals and 6 assists for 12 points in 17 games, and he was tied for the NHL rookie scoring lead earlier this week. He was firmly in the Calder conversation.
We had been tracking this one's rise, from Sturm preaching patience with Hagens to the news that nobody in the building had an answer on Thursday night.
How the Bruins lines look without Hagens
Boston Hockey Now reported on the forward changes at practice, and Jack Studley and McBride passed along the combinations.
These are practice lines, not a confirmed lineup for Sunday. Still, the Peterka-Zacha-Pastrnak group stays intact, which will keep the debate about how much Sturm leans on that unit alive.
The biggest question is the second line, where Minten has 6 goals and a +10 rating and now centers Poitras and Geekie. Poitras is listed as day-to-day with a nose injury, so even that group isn't guaranteed.
Mikey Eyssimont was recalled, but he wasn't seen at practice. He has not played a game for Boston this season, so don't read too much into it yet.
Losing a 20-year-old who was producing at that level hurts any team. The Bruins can absorb it because they're 12-4-1 and first in the Atlantic, with a 7-1-0 home record to lean on.
That gets tested Sunday at home against a Florida team that is 9-5-2. Boston has won 3 straight, and the depth up front gets its first real look without Hagens.
Quick hits
LOS ANGELES KINGSWelcome back, Alex Turcotte. Peter Laviolette says he returns to the lineup tonight against the Penguins, and that's a nice boost for the Kings. Always good to get a body back at the right moment.
FLORIDA PANTHERSTom Wilson got tossed this afternoon after a 5-minute boarding major on Sandis Vilmanis, with the Panthers in Washington. That's a big power play chance, and a scary moment to watch.
GOALIE MATCHUPJoel Hofer gets the start in net for the Blues today in Nashville. Mason McTavish is a game-time decision, so keep an eye on warmups. Hofer's got a big job ahead.
VANCOUVER CANUCKSThree words from the Canucks for tonight's game at Edmonton: "Same squad!" No tinkering, no drama. Sticking with the group is a vote of confidence, and I'm here for it.
WASHINGTON CAPITALSTom Wilson's night ended early against the Panthers. He was ejected with a boarding major and a game misconduct. The Capitals now have to finish this one without him, which is a tough ask.
