Morgan Geekie and Elias Lindholm are game-time calls as the Boston Bruins face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday.
After Saturday's 10-2 demolition of the New York Rangers, Marco Sturm said both Geekie and Lindholm will be game-time decisions. Boston hosts Pittsburgh at 5 p.m., so the lineup could stay cloudy until warmups.
Geekie's situation is the unusual one, because it had nothing to do with contact or a blocked shot. He left after the first period to attend to a family matter, and the Bruins later emphasized that everything was okay.
Lindholm's exit was more familiar and more concerning in the moment. The Bruins announced a lower-body injury during the game, and he did not return after leaving late in the second period.
Boston kept scoring anyway, which is how you end up with a blowout that still feels tense. Pavel Zacha notched his first NHL hat trick, Marat Khusnutdinov had a four-goal game, and David Pastrnak picked up six assists.
The stakes for Sunday are simple, these aren't depth pieces. Geekie leads Boston with 25 goals, and Lindholm is the kind of center who keeps the middle of the ice from turning into a track meet.
If either guy can't go, Boston may need to plug in a different forward and reshuffle roles on the fly. Jeffrey Viel and Michael Eyssimont are possible options if both absences carry over.
Geekie and Lindholm decisions loom for Bruins
As a Bruins fan, I'll take the 10-2 joy, but I'm still watching the injury updates first.
The Bruins just need their center depth to stay stable against Pittsburgh's speed through the neutral zone. If Lindholm sits, Boston has to keep breakouts cleaner and defend the slot with layers, not reach.
The good news is the Bruins are finally stacking points, and Sunday is another chance to bank two before the schedule tightens again. If Geekie and Lindholm are cleared, this turns from a worry story into a momentum game, which is exactly where Boston wants it.
Do you expect Morgan Geekie or Elias Lindholm to play for the Boston Bruins against the Pittsburgh Penguins?
